Nelson's Monument in Montreal, an original steel engraving by Lemaitre, with the heading "Canada" at the top and the caption "Monument de Nelson, à Montréal" below the image. The engraver's credit, "Lemaitre direxit," is printed below the plate at the lower left. The sheet dates from the mid-nineteenth century.
A tall classical column carrying a statue of Admiral Nelson rises from a square pedestal, which is decorated with carved naval emblems and a shield and is enclosed by an iron railing. The scene is set in an unpaved street, with two-story stone houses and a wooden shed at the sides, a cart and market women with baskets in the left foreground, and two figures walking at the right. A glimpse of the river appears between the buildings at the left. The sky is shaded in fine parallel lines.
The column was put up in Montreal in 1809, in the lower part of the city near the river, and it is one of the earliest monuments to Nelson anywhere, predating the one in Trafalgar Square. The print is one of a set of small Canadian views engraved in France around 1850, each headed "Canada" and numbered in the upper margin.
