Antique Architecture Prints

About this collection

Antique Architecture Prints presents the architectural prints of Bartele Gallery, a dealer in antique maps and prints in Langweer, the Netherlands. Bartele Gallery is the seller of every piece on this site.

Before photography, buildings were known from paper. Architects published their designs in pattern books, antiquarians measured the temples of Rome and Egypt, city historians engraved their town halls and churches, and owners had their castles and country houses drawn for albums. In the 19th century chromolithography made it possible to print ornament in full colour and gold, and Racinet, Dolmetsch and their contemporaries catalogued the decoration of every age.

The prints here come from those books and series. Every one is a period original, printed in its own day and often coloured by hand. The date given is the date the sheet was printed. Where a date is uncertain, we say so.
