About castles & palaces
Castles, palaces and country houses were drawn for their owners and for the books that celebrated them: the Dutch estate albums of Stoopendaal and Smallegange, Dahlbergh's Suecia Antiqua for the King of Sweden, Georgian engraved elevations, and Victorian albums of the stately homes of England.
The room holds more than two hundred of them, from moated castles in Utrecht and Gelderland to Windsor and Warwick, the Rhine castles, Versailles and Topkapi, and the palaces of Peking and Edo as the first European visitors described them.

Questions about castles & palaces
What is a buitenplaats?
A Dutch country estate, usually built by a wealthy Amsterdam or Utrecht merchant in the 1600s or 1700s along a river such as the Vecht or the Amstel. Engraved albums of them, by Stoopendaal and others, were published from 1719.
Are castle prints a good gift for an owner or a local?
Yes. Many prints here show a single named castle or house, so they are often bought by people who live in, visit or descend from the place. The title of each print names it.
