The Catskill Mountain House in New York, an original steel engraving of about 1830, lettered "View of the Catskill Mountain House, N.Y." in the border below the view. The imprint at the foot is that of J. and F. Tallis, London and New York.

The hotel stands on a bluff at the upper right as a long, low building with a pillared front, set against a wooded mountain, with smoke rising behind it. A road winds through woodland in the foreground, and a single rider on horseback ascends it toward the house. Dense trees and shrubs, some of them dead and bare, fill the slopes.

The view is set in an ornamental border of scrolling foliage. A vignette of riders at the top and two scenes of frontier life in the lower corners, one lettered "Chippewa", complete the border. The Mountain House, opened in the 1820s, was a destination for travelers and landscape painters in the Hudson Valley.
