The Court House in St. Louis, an original steel engraving of about 1850 lettered "The Court-House in St. Louis". The sheet is printed in black on cream paper, with small publisher's credit lines at the lower corners.

The building is seen from across a street corner, a cruciform neoclassical block with a pedimented Ionic portico of tall columns and a tall central dome with a lantern and slender finial. Around it the street is full of mid-century life: a carriage and a pair of horses with a cab, a rider on horseback, women in wide skirts and men in top hats, children and a small dog in the foreground. A tall tree at the left and part of a building at the left edge frame the view, and blocks of houses stand behind the courthouse on the right.

This is the courthouse on Fourth Street, the building later associated with the Dred Scott case.
