Antique Constantinople Street Scene Print, Ottoman Fountain Meyer, 1850

Description:

A finely detailed mid-19th-century steel engraving depicting a street scene in Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul), centered around an ornate Ottoman fountain or gate structure. This elegant architectural composition captures the richness of everyday urban life in the Ottoman capital, combining refined decorative detail with lively human activity.

At the heart of the scene stands a richly ornamented public fountain, crowned with domed finials and intricate carvings typical of Ottoman civic architecture. Such fountains were important social and functional landmarks, serving both as sources of water and as gathering places within the city. Surrounding the structure, figures in traditional dress are engaged in daily routines, some resting in the shade, others passing through the street, bringing a strong narrative quality to the composition. To the right, pack animals and their handlers further emphasize the movement and rhythm of life within the city.

The engraving originates from Meyer’s Universum, the celebrated illustrated publication produced by the Bibliographisches Institut in Germany during the mid-19th century. Known for its high-quality steel engravings, the series aimed to present accurate and visually appealing views of important cities and regions around the world. These prints were based on firsthand observations and skilled artistic interpretation, making them both informative and highly decorative.

Executed in crisp steel engraving, the print displays fine linework and tonal depth, particularly in the architectural detailing and subtle shading. It reflects the European fascination with the Ottoman world during this period, offering a glimpse into the textures, structures, and daily life of Constantinople around 1850.

Condition report:

Good condition with age-related toning and scattered foxing, mainly visible in the margins. Minor handling wear. Plate mark visible. Overall a clear and well-preserved impression.

Framing tips:

Suitable for both classic and contemporary interiors. A dark walnut or ebonized frame with an ivory mat enhances the contrast and historical character. Alternatively, a slim black or bronze frame with generous matting creates a clean, modern presentation while highlighting the fine detail.

Special note:

This is an original antique engraving, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The print is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be on scale with the original.
