The monument to Wolfe and Montcalm at Quebec, an original steel engraving by Lemaitre, dated around 1850. The sheet is headed "Canada" and captioned "Monument de Wolfe et de Montcalm, à Québec," with the engraver's credit, "Lemaitre direxit," printed below the plate at the lower left.
A tall obelisk stands on a stepped base at the right of the picture, enclosed by a low wooden fence, with a few figures in nineteenth-century dress beside it, one of them a soldier in uniform. Poplars and shrubs frame the left foreground, and beyond the fence the land falls away to a wide stretch of the St. Lawrence with small sailing boats on the water. Wooded hills with scattered buildings rise on the far shore under a sky shaded in fine, soft clouds.
The monument commemorates both General James Wolfe and General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm, who died at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759, and it was erected in 1828. It is unusual among memorials in honoring commanders from opposing sides. The print belongs to a set of small Canadian views engraved in France, each headed "Canada," and was made for a European audience.
