The tomb of George Washington at Mount Vernon, Virginia, an original steel engraving published around 1850 by Herrmann J. Meyer. The sheet is printed in black. The plate title reads "Das Grab von Washington", and the lower margin bears the credit "Drawn after Nature" with the line "For the Proprietors Herrmann J. Meyer".
The tomb is shown as a small brick enclosure with a gateway of stone piers and a pointed arched wooden door, set among trees. Two visitors stand before the entrance, and a large tree leans in from the right and arches across the upper part of the sheet. Rough boulders, shrubs and a gently rising woodland fill the rest of the scene.
George Washington died in 1799 and was buried at Mount Vernon, his Potomac River estate. His remains were moved to a new tomb on the estate in 1831. The plate belongs to the German-language series of American views issued under Meyer's name.
