The Brooklyn Bridge over the East River, an original wood engraving with hand color from The Illustrated London News, June 1883. The caption beneath reads "The Brooklyn Bridge over the East River, between Long Island and New York", and the print was issued within weeks of the bridge's opening in May 1883.

The view looks over the rooftops from a high vantage point toward the bridge, the great stone towers of its suspension span standing against a broad sky of heaped, yellowing clouds. The cables sweep down in long curves from the two towers to the shore, with a tall brick chimney or tower rising on the New York side at the left. Below, the river is crowded with masted sailing ships, steamers and ferries, and the foreground is packed with the chimneys, warehouses and flat roofs of lower Manhattan, drawn with fine hatching in the shadows.

The East River Bridge, as it was long known, was the longest suspension bridge in the world on completion, and the Illustrated London News gave its readers one of the first large views of it. The panoramic angle shows how thoroughly the span dominated the surrounding skyline from its first year.
