Column of the Immaculate Conception, Rome, Piazza di Spagna, 1869

This finely executed lithograph depicts the Column of the Immaculate Conception in Piazza di Spagna, surrounded by everyday Roman life. The tall column rises dramatically against the sky, while figures, carriages, and buildings frame the square below. Philippe Benoist’s composition emphasizes vertical grandeur balanced by lively street detail.

Created between 1867 and 1869 for “Rome dans sa Grandeur,” the print documents a monument erected in 1857, making it a relatively modern landmark at the time. Benoist presents the column not as an isolated symbol but as an integrated part of Rome’s urban fabric, reflecting contemporary devotional and civic life.

The delicate tinting lends warmth and atmosphere, while the crisp lithographic lines preserve architectural clarity. This plate appeals to collectors of Roman monuments, Marian iconography, and 19th-century urban scenes.

Condition report: Light age toning; minor foxing mainly in margins; image clean and well defined.

Framing tips: Light grey mat with a dark frame to emphasize vertical composition.
