About bridges & monuments
The public buildings of a city told visitors what it valued: a town hall, an exchange, a custom house, a bridge, a column raised to a victory. Engravers drew them for city histories, travel books and the illustrated papers.
Here are the town halls of the Dutch Golden Age, the exchanges of Amsterdam, London, Lyon and Copenhagen, the bridges of the Thames from Kew to London Bridge, the columns and fountains of Rome, Paris and London, and the state houses and banks of 19th century America.
